IMPORTANT UPDATE: Because of a decision by the Cook County Circuit Court, the Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act will not be enforced until further notice. A judge granted a temporary restraining order against the law, which will remain in effect until the judge decides to change it.
This means that, for the time being, your doctor is NOT required to notify an adult family member before you can have an abortion. Until the court issues another order, minors who do not feel comfortable involving an adult family member in their abortion decision are allowed to have an abortion without doing so.
The Illinois Judicial Bypass Coordination Project Hotline (1-877-44BYPASS) is available every evening from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. to provide free confidential assistance. You can also text questions to 312-560-6607 or email judicialbypass@aclu-il.org.
